Handicapping the New Generation of Designers

Lately I've been reading a lot of WWD (The Bible) and I came across this article, “Handicapping the New Generation of Designers” by David Lipke.  In this article, David wrote about how over 40 designers showcased menswear.  These new designers, just naming a few: Todd Snyder, Robert Geller and Richard Chai, to give a break through experience just like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein or Tommy Hilfiger? In this article they are concerned with how well these designers will go forth in making menswear.  Brooks Thomas, founder of consulting firm Brooks Thomas Group stated that she doesn’t believe anyone will be as big as those three exceptional designers.  It is said that when Ralph Lauren started his business, Fashion was not seen like it is today.  Tom Kalenderian described Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani unique in the fact that they were one of the first designers to start and it will never be like that again. (Lipke, WWD)
I believe with a lot of encouragement, dedication and time these new designers for menswear will sky rocket.  Fashion is changing.  People are changing. These new designers are young; they know what the younger generation wants.  As time goes by, Todd Snyder could be the next Ralph Lauren.  How can people judge and forecast the future of fashion when fashion changes every single day.  I believe with time, these new designers will make it to the top and be the top selling designers in the country.  Menswear is and has been very popular.  There are new ideas coming out every day, it’s just about who’s going to make it and who isn’t.

RE: Would You Date: A Fashion Student

Click on “RE: Would You Date: A Fashion Student”  to read the article.

If anyone knows a student who attends a college focused on fashion, they would know we are hard-working individuals who strive for the very best just like any other student at any other college. However, some people don’t agree. According to the article by Elite Daily, “Would You Date: A Fashion Student”, they had many negative perceptions of fashion students. For example: fashion students party every night and “are also complete lushes when drunk…pure comedy.” First of all, if this person really did their research, they would’ve figured out that lush, is the equivalent of being drunk. Who looks like the dumbass now? Also, this person claims that we like to partake in oral sex in restrooms. I don’t know who this person came in contact with but this is very bias. This is my favorite quote from the article, “Fashion Students don’t give real homework, so gossiping and surfing fashion blogs become the favorite pastimes of these ‘students’.” They work in the use of quotations when using the word students, as if we aren’t real students. Out of all the craziest claims, this person says we do massive drugs. For example, lines of coke.
Most fashion students are in the library, working full time, and doing massive amounts of homework on the weekends. We go above and beyond what is required to succeed. Being in this field, you have to be serious, passionate, dedicated and focused on the future. While this is true for some students, most fashion students do not fit the category that they are putting us in. This article claims that fashion students are the most drug abused, party animals, meanwhile, they fail to acknowledge that not only do fashion students go out and party, other students in non-fashion schools may be doing the same.
After reading this article, it seems that many people have a stereotype about fashion students. It can be one of the most challenging and competitive professions out there. To state all these claims, they did not perform the proper research because not all fashion students fall under these accusations. To throw fashion students as a whole into one big stereotype is giving a bad impression towards society, future jobs, and parents. This may very well potentially affect future opportunities for aspiring fashion stylist, editors, visual merchandisers, buyers, etc. Over all, this article does not give fashion students the credibility they deserve when it comes to their education and lifestyles.
